Out of Sight (1998)

Out of Sight is a sly and sexy film adaptation of Elmore Leonard's crime novel by the same name. Starring George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez, the film is a startling break from Soderbergh's previous films. His independent, small-scope style is drastically replaced by this big budget, mainstream movie.

Jack Foley (Clooney) is a ex-con caught in another bank robbery. He returns to prison and joins a team of convicts planning an escape. Deputy federal marshal Karen Sisco (Lopez) is on the premises while the escape occurs, and becomes intricately connected to the fate of Foley. While Foley is dedicated to avoiding returning to prison at all costs, Sisco vows to capture him. Inevitably, the two characters become connected in a strange and offbeat love affair from afar.

Smoothly filmed and filled with action, short edit cuts and Elmore Leonard's trademark sharp dialogue, Out of Sight is an enjoyable postmodern romp through the confusions and class lines of cops and robbers. A mainstream film with big actors and industry support, Out of Sight is a pulp film of the highest caliber.
