Portrait of E.C. Ricart (1917)

One of Miró’s early portrait paintings, this work shows the beginnings of the artist’s tendency toward abstraction. He uses blotches of fierce colors throughout the painting, much like van Gogh and Cézanne but retaining a personal style. The paint palette found in the upper left-hand corner of the painting is set against a bright yellow background, complemented by Miró’s gifted handling of colors in Ricart’s hair and face.
