This is Prokofiev at his most satirical, the Prokofiev of 1919 riding on the coattails of his own earlier successes. Love Song for Three Oranges is a satire of operatic conventions in four fast moving acts. The plot, written by the composer, is the story of a naïve prince and an evil witch desiring to place her own representative on the throne. The music itself is wicked, brazen, with sharp brass sections and wildly demonic atonalities. The March section, well remembered for its wry harmonic turns and humorous demeanor, has been preserved in Prokofiev’s short six-movement suite, a piece that is a staple in Prokofiev’s concert music.
