Peter and the Wolf (1936)

This is the twentieth century blueprint for the instruments of an orchestra, a deceptively simple pedagogical work for narrator and orchestra. Different instrument groups represent different characters in the story. The story opens with Peter wandering into an open meadow. Here he meets a bird, a duck, and a cat, and befriends all three. When Peter's grandfather realizes the young boy is playing in the meadow, he immediately goes to Peter and warns his grandson of the danger that lurks in the meadow’s surroundings. Then, the grandfather takes Peter home and tells him not to return to the meadow. In the following scene, however, Peter sees his animal friends being attacked by a wolf in the meadow. Peter goes to the assistance of his friends and they work together to capture the wolf. The wonderfully childish story concludes with Peter convincing the hunters to follow the wolf, capture him, then take him to the zoo.
