Relativity (1953)

This is one of Escher’s most mind-boggling examples of drawing with multiple perspectives. Like most of his artwork, Escher intrigues his viewers and challenges their point of view with the extraordinarily clean detail of his lithographic technique. In Relativity, "up" is indicated in five different directions, as played out by odd, faceless figures moving about a house and seemingly unaware of the other humanoids who cling to the ceilings, walls, and floors. The title points to Escher’s lifelong interest in science, an interest that was heartily reciprocated by mathematicians, crystallographers and other scientists of his time and afterwards.
