The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)

Based on Nikos Kazantzakis's retelling of the Gospels, The Last Temptation of Christ chronicles Jesus's journey from doubt to acceptance of his divinity and then, following the prodding of Judas, the ultimate sacrifice that such divinity requires. The Last Temptation of Christ is remarkable for its attention to the human side of Jesus. The fact that the Sermon on the Mount is given to a handful rather than a throng is indicative of this tendency, as is the vivid dream sequence that constitutes the "last temptation." Fundamentalist uproar almost kept this film from being made, though this controversy eventually led to the film's immense popularity upon release. Despite this popularity, however, the film is still not part of the basic stock of every video store, and those in small towns may be hard pressed to find a rentable copy.
