These three-dimensional pieces created a sensation on exhibit in the Stable Gallery, New York, because they were exactly the same as the originals except for the use of wood instead of cardboard. At the opening, there was a line down the street to get into the gallery. Much to Warhol's delight, when the Brillo Boxes were sent to a Canadian exhibit, they were initially classed by customs as commercial goods. As a result, the artwork could only be passed through the border once the curators of Ottawa's National Gallery paid a duty.
