This was Warhol's first film to be a hit with the public, not just the underground film societies. It showed the lives of people living in the Chelsea Hotel in New York City. Voyeuristic in its depictions, Chelsea Girls was the culmination of Warhol's early experimentation with film techniques; shown on two adjacent screens, no attempt was made to hide the processes that went into the film. This frustrated reviewers very much, because it made the viewing process an individualistic experience. Chance overlappings in sound and images made reviewers think that they were possibly seeing a different version of the film from their colleagues, a maddening risk to them.
